Meet Lisa Kearny

OTR/L, E-RYT 200

How my journey began

I began my yoga journey when I took my first yoga class in high school. I took a fitness test and could barely reach past my knees. The gym teacher recommended that I take a yoga class to increase flexibility and strength.

That was it. I was hooked.

My path with yoga was just beginning, and I had no idea the joy and healing it would bring me.

I now live in my native Bowling Green, Ky with my family. I currently work with older adults in a rehab to home & nursing facility as well as teach private and group classes.

After being diagnosed with Lyme disease 2 years ago, I know what chronic pain feels like. After I practice yoga, I experience a significant decrease in joint pain. My passion is to share my experience and knowledge of yoga and its therapeutic benefits with others.

Why I love Yoga

I practiced vinyasa flow yoga while living in New York City and thought of it as a “great workout.” It wasn’t until health issues slowed me down that I really discovered the true healing power of yoga. I taught children’s yoga focusing on kids with special needs when I discovered Occupational Therapy (OT), a profession I had never heard of. I was intrigued. I had finally found something that addressed both mental and physical health. I knew I wanted to be a healthcare provider. I had finally found my calling. I enrolled and obtained my Masters of Occupational Therapy at Columbia University in New York City.

When I finished my studies, I knew I wanted to teach yoga in addition to being a health practitioner. I obtained my 200-hour at Yogaworks and began to teach. It was then I discovered Iyengar Yoga, which changed my entire yoga practice. Iyengar yoga is a slow therapeutic practice focusing on alignment. I completed 90 hours of teacher training at the Iyengar Center in Nashville at 12 South Yoga. Today I integrate yoga into the rehabilitation settings I work in. My patients love the chair yoga classes with meditation and report it makes a huge difference in their lives. Studying with Judith Lasater and learning about therapeutic yoga influences my practice and patient care. I want to continue learning and growing.
